Kitecamp in Watamu, Kenya

Hakuna Matata

Kitesurfing in Kenya. Sounds exotic? It is. And it's still an insider tip, too. Even before Watamu appeared on the kitesurfing map, we knew: If we were going to kitesurf in winter, this was the place to be. Watamu is located just north of Mombasa, on the east coast of Africa. A versatile kite spot, our private kite lodge, a luxurious residential complex that leaves nothing to be desired.

This is the perfect opportunity for you to escape the cold winter in Europe – head to Africa for kitesurfing!

In Watamu, you'll find a long, white sandy beach and reliable thermal sideshore winds. Temperatures are tropical, reflecting its proximity to the equator. Perfect kite sessions in bikinis or board shorts await you in consistent winds. Additionally, Kenya offers breathtaking scenery and the incredibly relaxed Hakuna Matata lifestyle, all waiting to be discovered.

Our kite camp in Kenya offers one thing above all: time and leisure. Hakuna Matata!

Don't forget the coaching package

10 of 14 participants book coaching in Kenya

Why are we telling you this? We've found that many of our camp participants want to book our coaching once they arrive – because of the rapid progress of others, because they're already in paradise, or because the conditions are different than expected. In exceptional cases, we can make this possible, but especially in Kenya, if you make a spontaneous decision, we often have too few coaches on site to meet your wishes and our coaching standards if you don't book in advance.

In the video, Olsen briefly explains the difference between supervision (included in the price) and our coaching package (6 days of intensive training for maximum progress on top).

As always, you decide what works for you.

Reliable thermal wind

Spot & Wind in Watamu

In addition to warm temperatures and thus kitesurfing without neoprene in the Indian Ocean, Kenya also offers a reliable and constant sideshore wind. In Watamu you will find a white sandy beach that stretches for several kilometers.

During breakfast you will notice the leaves starting to move in the wind, because in the course of the morning the constant wind sets in and accompanies you until sunset. You will usually fly kites between ten and twelve square meters.

Due to the tides, Watamu is a spot with many faces and each of them has its own peculiarity. Sensational downwind trips are also possible. We just have to decide how many kilometers we want to kite with the wind.

amazed when the gate opens

Accomodation in Watamu

Near the town of Watamu, we discovered a very special complex: extremely cozy, like a small jungle village, with lots of greenery and direct access to the sea. Already at breakfast, we encountered the first monkeys who came to share bananas with us.

The complex features individual bungalows in a traditional style, with spacious rooms and very modern furnishings. In the center of the bungalows is our "living room," the communal area without walls. There are also private yoga and meditation rooms and a private pool.

We can reach Kite Beach in five minutes by tuk-tuk or motorbike. Rides are plentiful and very affordable in Watamu.

Activities in Kenya

We offer plenty of additional activities for non-kiters and kite-lazy people. Or simply as an alternative if the sore muscles are too intense or if there is a lull after all.

Detailed information on the Kitecamp in Watamu

We have been traveling to Kenya ourselves and with groups for years and are very familiar with both traveling to and in the country and kiting at the spot.

We have briefly summarized all the useful information for you.

In Kenya you will find enough space for many kiters, but there are none. Usually it is only us and two or three other people on the water. Thanks to the reliable thermals, you can prepare for many wind days. We will mainly have wind for ten to twelve square meter kites.

Due to the sideshore wind we will mainly stay at the kite station, where we have also stored our equipment and can use the infrastructure. In Watamu you can of course freely organize your time. We definitely don't have stress, we have a lot of time.

We'll help you progress and improve your skills during our kitesurfing sessions. If you'd like to try a waveboard or foil, we can make it happen. Waves can occasionally be found at the reef, but the tides and wind have to be perfectly aligned for that to happen.

We also plan downwinders if conditions are right. The only thing we need to decide is how long we want to ride the wind. We'll ensure your progress, safety, and lots of fun on the water.

As part of the international edition of our kite camp, large parts of the joint program, such as video analysis or workshops, may be held in English. As with all our other camps, coaching sessions will also be conducted in English if needed.

Therefore, anyone who wants to ensure that the majority of the content is presented in German should book a "standard" event.

Yes, so that you can try things out and don't have to sit around waiting for better wind, we offer our equipment in a package. Our equipment rental includes kites and boards.

Whether you're kiting on land or on the water, in strong or light winds – we have the right equipment for you! This means you can travel much more carefree, use twin-tip or waveboards as you please, and enjoy new kites from top brands like Flysurfer, Core, Ozone, Harlem, or Duotone, and spend more time on the water overall.

Good to know: Harness and neoprene equipment

If you don't have your own harness or want to try one out, let us know, and we'll pack the right one for you to rent. By the way, the rental fee will be credited towards the purchase price if you keep the harness after the camp.

If you don't have your own wetsuit or other neoprene equipment, we're happy to advise you or help you rent one on-site.

Our kitecamp includes Supervision .

For everyone who wants to learn kitesurfing or enjoy some kite lessons for intense progress we offer Coaching packages.

Based on experience, 10 out of 14 participants ultimately want a coaching package. Please note, however, that booking additional coaching sessions on-site is limited or even impossible. Therefore, if you're keen to make progress, please book your coaching package in advance.

As soon as the gate opens, the luxurious mansion will impress you. The property has a beautiful landscaped tropical garden, a large swimming pool and a cozy area to relax.

You don't have to take care of your physical well-being in Kenya, as there is a private cook for us. He provides you with breakfast and dinner. Every day starts with a healthy breakfast together. There is homemade granola with fresh and juicy fruits, eggs in different variations and deliciously ripe avocados.

During the day you can get something to drink right on the kite beach at the surrounding bars and restaurants and buy a lunch snack or a delicious Italian ice cream.

Dinner at our mansion is varied. There is everything from vegetarian dishes to meat or fish.

In the city of Watamu (five minutes by moped or tuk tuk) there are some good restaurants and bars where you can eat and drink well. With a lot of Italian influence, you are well looked after here in very beautiful places.

The final destination of the trip is Mombasa. Ethiopian Airlines flies there relatively quickly with a stopover. Our tip: Ethiopian Airlines includes one 23 kg sports baggage allowance.

No matter how you get to Mombasa, we will definitely pick you up from the airport.

Visa: The visa in Kenya is called (The Kenya Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA)) and must be applied for online before travelling.

Transfer to the mansion: We organize a transfer to your accommodation and back again. This is already included in the price.

Money: Official currency in Kenya is the Kenyan shilling. If you want you can change a small amount at the airport. However, we advise you not to change a larger amount there, because there is an opportunity for a better course in Watamu. You can also withdraw money with your credit card in the city.

Visa: A visa is mandatory for your entry into Kenya. You can apply online in advance and it costs around € 55.-

Passport: Your passport must be valid for six months upon entry.

Vaccinations: There is no mandatory vaccination for Kenya. However, it is advisable to contact your doctor or the tropical institute in advance and to consult.

Malaria: We recommend extensive insect protection. However, everyone has to decide for themselves whether to take malaria medication prophylactically. It is best to clarify here with the tropical institute and your doctor.

Internet: There is wifi in the mansion and at the kite center. If you need internet anytime and anywhere, you can of course get your own SIM card,

Travel insurance: We're not insurance agents, but we're committed to offering you comprehensive travel insurance. And in truth, cancellation and travel insurance does make sense. You can choose an insurance package when booking.

Equipment insurance: With the insurance tool of the Association of German Water Sports Schools (VDWS) you are insured against damage to your own equipment or to the rental equipment. This has often saved us stress, which is why we definitely recommend the VDWS Safety Tool! You can find more information about this http://safetytool.de/VY99056

Safari: We can organize a safari for you and other participants on site. We recommend a two-day tour of the Tsavo East National Park with an overnight stay in a lodge. Of course you can also stay longer on safari or start or end your vacation with a tour.
